INTRODUCTION

A Conscientisation Programme is an educational initiative designed to raise awareness and foster critical consciousness among individuals about key social, environmental, or health-related issues. The term “conscientisation” refers to the process of gaining a profound understanding of one’s circumstances and taking informed steps toward positive change. These programmes encourage learners to think critically, reflect on real-world challenges, and act responsibly, thereby connecting education with social transformation.

As part of the Third Semester B.Ed curriculum, the teacher trainees of Sree Narayana Training College, Nedunganda, organized a Conscientisation Programme in SCVBHS Chirayinkeezhu on “Awareness on Basic Hygiene” to promote understanding of the importance of personal and environmental cleanliness. The programme aimed to educate students on maintaining good hygiene practices in their daily lives and to develop habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle and a cleaner society. It also provided the B.Ed teacher trainees with valuable practical experience in planning and conducting awareness-based educational programmes in schools.






OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

1. To create awareness among students about the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene in daily life.

2. To educate students on various aspects of hygiene, including handwashing, oral care, bathing, food hygiene, and waste management.

3. To develop healthy habits and positive attitudes towards cleanliness, sanitation, and personal well-being.

4. To encourage active participation of students through interactive sessions and competitions that promote creativity and understanding of hygiene practices.

5. To provide practical experience for trainee teachers in planning, organizing, and implementing a school-based awareness programme effectively.








EDUCATIONAL VALUES / IMPLICATIONS

The Conscientisation Programme on “Awareness on Basic Hygiene” holds significant educational implications as it promotes both cognitive and behavioural development among students. It helps learners cultivate a sense of personal responsibility for cleanliness, health, and environmental care, thereby fostering positive attitudes and healthy habits essential for holistic growth.

The programme encourages experiential learning through discussions, visual aids, and competitions, enabling active participation and deeper understanding of hygiene and sanitation. For teacher trainees, it provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life contexts, enhancing their pedagogical, communicative, and organizational skills.

Educationally, the initiative underscores the importance of integrating health and hygiene education into the school curriculum, ensuring that learning extends beyond academics to nurture responsible, health-conscious, and socially aware individuals.







Description of the Conscientisation Programme – Awareness on Basic Hygiene

As part of the B.Ed curriculum, a Conscientisation Programme on “Awareness on Basic Hygiene” was organized on 12th September 2025 at S.C.V. Boys High School, Chirayinkeezhu. The main aim of the programme was to create awareness among school students about the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and to encourage them to adopt healthy habits in their daily lives.

With the kind permission of the Headmistress, the programme was conducted by the B.Ed trainee teachers — Vinu K, Karishma T B, Athira S, Megha Ravi, Aiswarya G S, Reshma R S, Saranya L, Rohini Anilkumar, Neethu Prakash, Navaneeth M S, and Anjali A M. The awareness class was held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for the Upper Primary section students of the school.

The session included an interactive discussion on various topics related to personal and environmental hygiene, such as personal cleanliness, proper handwashing techniques, oral hygiene, bathing habits, hair and nail care, menstrual hygiene, food hygiene, safe drinking water, toilet hygiene, waste management, and environmental sanitation. Students were also reminded about the importance of wearing clean clothes, covering the mouth while sneezing or coughing, using handkerchiefs, and keeping classrooms and surroundings neat and clean.

To make the session more engaging and effective, a short film on Basic Hygiene was screened for the students, helping them visualize and better understand the importance of maintaining hygiene in everyday life.

Following the awareness class, competitions were conducted for the students. At 11:15 a.m., the Upper Primary students participated in a Quiz, Poster Making Competition, and Drawing Competition based on the theme “Basic Hygiene.” The topic for the Drawing Competition was “Ente Suchithwam Ente Suraksha” (My Cleanliness, My Safety) and the topic for the Poster Making Competition was “Shuchithwam Arogyathinte Vazhikatti” (Cleanliness – The Path to Health). In the afternoon session, similar competitions were conducted for the High School students, offering them an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and awareness on hygiene practices.

The prizes for the competition winners were distributed during the school assembly on 22nd September 2025, where the students were appreciated for their enthusiastic participation and creative contributions.

The programme proved to be highly informative, interactive, and impactful. It effectively spread awareness about essential hygiene practices and motivated students to maintain cleanliness and good health. The event also offered valuable practical experience to the trainee teachers in planning, organizing, and executing a school-based awareness initiative successfully. Overall, the Conscientisation Programme on “Awareness on Basic Hygiene” was a meaningful, inspiring, and enriching experience for both the trainees and the students.
Report On The Short Film Screened

As part of the Conscientisation Programme on “Awareness on Basic Hygiene,” a short film titled “Nutrition, Health and Sanitation” in Malayalam was screened for the students. The film highlighted the importance of maintaining personal cleanliness, following healthy food habits, and keeping one’s surroundings neat and hygienic. Through engaging visuals and a simple narrative, it effectively conveyed how good hygiene and proper nutrition contribute to overall health and well-being.

The short film helped students clearly understand the practical aspects of hygiene, including handwashing, oral care, waste disposal, and safe food practices. It also encouraged them to adopt cleanliness as a part of their daily routine. The screening served as an impactful visual aid that reinforced the key messages discussed in the awareness session, making the programme more interesting, relatable, and memorable for the students.








CONCLUSION

The Conscientisation Programme on “Awareness on Basic Hygiene” proved to be highly successful in achieving its goal of creating awareness among students about the importance of personal and environmental cleanliness. Through interactive sessions, competitions, and the screening of a short film, students were able to grasp the concepts of hygiene in an enjoyable and meaningful way, encouraging them to adopt healthy habits in their daily lives.

For the B.Ed trainee teachers, the programme offered valuable practical experience in planning, organizing, and executing an awareness-oriented educational activity. Overall, it was a fruitful and enlightening experience that not only enhanced students’ understanding but also reinforced the vital message that cleanliness forms the foundation of good health and overall well-being.
